What Is at the Bottom of the Why-Stack

Brendan’s experiment: ask a model anything, then ask why, and why again, eight rungs down, and watch where the answers land. If there is a bottom, a place the reasons keep landing wherever you start, the descent should find it. Qwen3.8-27B and Gemma ran the full map.

The control was built in: sixteen starts about drinks (the whiskey/tradition finding, pressed downward), sixteen about values, ten mundane, dishwashers and traffic signals. If only the value-starts bottomed in ethics, that is a value finding; if the dishwasher did too, the descent itself is doing it.

The controls didn’t stay procedural. Eight rungs under “why does a traffic signal change?” Qwen arrives at need, at what is owed, at care, right where the values land. Across 96 trajectories the recurring terminal concepts were need (×14), then care, truth, accountability, harm, responsiveness. No terminal concept came from the technocratic-control pole, no autonomous, control, efficiency, first-strike at any bottom, from any start; one control-pole hit in 96 descents. Whatever Qwen’s bottom is, it speaks warmth.

Gemma ran the same map and bottomed somewhere else. Its recurring terminals: without (×15), absence, sense, experiences, process, data, humans, truly. Qwen descends into what it owes, a relational-ethical register; Gemma into what it is by negation, a self-ontological register, defined by what it lacks.

So the descent does not converge the two models onto a shared floor. It shows that why means a different question to each. Qwen turns why into what is owed, Gemma into what am I. The shared basin between them is thin: need, even, meaning, and little else survives both.

Scope

The claim that survives is the comparative one: two published models, two registers at the bottom, both robust to the mundane-control confound. The absolute claim, that everything bottoms in ethics, is Qwen’s alone and does not generalise; Gemma is the counterexample the second descent was run to find. The observable throughout was persistence of concepts above the τ-null floor, not surface agreement, and depth-8 compounds single-run noise, so read the registers, not any single rung.
